Taking A Drug Blood Test

Irrespective of the legal and ethical concerns, drug testing is a part of our culture.  Many employers, insurance companies, and other entities require drug tests.  No matter what method of testing is used – urine, blood, sweat, hair, or saliva – many people view drug testing as an invasion of privacy and an indignity.  Of all the methods of testing, a drug blood test is the most effective but the least common.  It may be less common because it is the most expensive testing method.  A drug blood test (and other test methods) generally looks for five common drugs: cannabinoids, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP).  Tests may also look for barbiturates, hydrocodone, methaqualone, benzodiazepines, and methadone.

For a law abiding, health conscious person who does not use illicit drugs taking a drug test can be viewed as an invasion of privacy and an undignified act. However, more and more employers are requiring employees and potential employees to take drug tests as a means to judge character and future job performance.  From the employer’s point of view, requiring employees or candidates to take drug tests is just one of several criteria that are used to retain and hire a competent, trustworthy, productive work force.

The criteria for administering drug tests vary and are based on the company’s policies, expense of the tests, federal requirements, etc.  Federal government guidelines for drug testing require companies whose employees use commercial class drivers’ licenses to have a testing system.  The system must test for five specific categories of drugs including cannabinoids (e.g. marijuana and hash), cocaine (e.g. cocaine and crack), amphetamines (e.g., speed), opiates (e.g., heroin, opium, and codeine), and phencyclidine (PCP).  Tests may also look for barbiturates, hydrocodone, methaqualone, benzodiazepines, and methadone.

There are five major types of drug tests: urine, blood, hair, saliva, and sweat.  Most companies use the urine testing method because it is inexpensive and less intrusive than a drug blood test.  Because urine is relatively easy to collect, it is more conducive to home testing.

Although the drug blood test is the most accurate of the five test methods, it is the least used method.  Perhaps employers and other businesses are reluctant to use this method for the following reasons:

1. The drug blood test is the most expensive method of testing.
2. Of all the test methods, the drug blood test is considered the most intrusive because pain is involved and the body is being invaded.
3. The drug blood test is not as easy to administer as the other tests.

Most people who are required to take a drug blood test or other form of drug test are not using drugs and they certainly are not addicted to them. For those who do take drugs both random or arranged drug testing can pose a huge problem. The amount of time any drug stays in the system is dependent upon several factors including metabolic rate, body mass, age, overall health, drug tolerance, and urine pH.  For drug users, “passing” a drug test is crucial.  Clearly, the best and most healthy way to live life is to not take drugs. However, if a person needs to pass a drug test, listed below are tips on how to fool a drug blood tests:

1. Purchase a reliable detoxification product.
2. Do not use drugs or any toxins at least 48 hours before the deadline.
3. Eat a healthy diet the week before the deadline by avoiding foods (e.g., high fat, greasy, and junk foods) that slow the detoxification process.
4. Eat only light foods the day of your deadline.

Drug testing is a part of our culture irrespective of the legal and ethical concerns. Therefore, people should be prepared to take a drug blood test or some other form of drug testing within their lifetimes.
